Talk About Bloody “Revenge!”
I had heard about this 2017 French shocker, and after seeing it, I understand why it’s so controversial – it’s one of the bloodiest revenge thrillers in the post #MeToo world – for good reason!
“Revenge” was directed and written by Coralie Fargeat, and it’s incredibly well made and features a star-making turn by Matilda Lutz!
Lutz plays Jen, who goes away with her boyfriend for the weekend – but when his hunting buddies show up, she ends up brutalized and left for dead.
Unfortunately for her assailants, she survives and begins a relentless quest for bloody revenge.

I mention the #MeToo movement, because this is an “empowered female” film from a female Director who doesn’t flinch in showing her lead character’s thirst for revenge.
On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film scored a 93% approval rating. The website’s critical consensus reads:
“Revenge slices and dices genre tropes, working within an exploitation framework while adding a timely — yet never less than viscerally thrilling — feminist spin.”
Folks, there is a LOT of blood sprayed during this film, and it never stops being a visceral thrill-ride.
A.O. Scott of The New York Times said:
“Blunt, bloody and stylish almost in spite of itself, Revenge is a synthesis of exploitation and feminism.”
“Revenge” is beautifully stylized and definitely worth seeing, but get ready for some really tough scenes – and a LOT OF BLOOD.
That could make it a polarizing screening, much like a few other films I have covered here:
The french thriller “Martyrs” also pushed the limits of cinematic brutality in pursuit of art – one of several films that were critically acclaimed but censored around the world – see them here:

We discussed ‘Revenge’ on your other blog, John. But I am always happy to see mention of ‘Martyrs’. That’s such an amazing film, and overwhelmed me when I saw it. One that you NEVER forget.
Best wishes, Pete.
