Time To Get “Bare Behind Bars!”
Boy, was I unprepared for this!
“Bare Behind Bars” is a 1980 “Women In Prison” grindhouse classic from Brazil, written and directed by Oswaldo de Oliveira. The film stars Maria Stella Splendore, Marta Anderson and Danielle Ferrite.
I bought a copy from a cult movie company, and didn’t realize that this was what I was getting!

“Uncut” And Behind Bars – With No Clothes!
To put it simply: I think this is the most naked and perverted “WIP” film of all time! There is barely a minute of the film where an inmate isn’t naked, being tortured, showering, or being examined by a Doctor – naked!

The plot is as simple as these movies usually are: inside a dirty women’s prison in Brazil, the inmates are young and beautiful, and the warden is a sadist.

Oh, and she always leaves her uniform unbuttoned, while the guards love to torture the inmates, and the nurse likes to do VERY INVASIVE exams. You know, standard “Women In Prison” stuff – except:

These Prisoners Are REALLY REALLY CLEAN!
Yes, there are more shower scenes in this film than a gym hygiene movie! They shower ALL THE TIME – and always in large groups!

A few other things to point out: the convicts wear very revealing smocks with very few buttons. None of them wear underwear. You know that because they keep showing them without any!

As one review put it succinctly:
“They are alternately murderous and orgiastic with each other, and they engage in sex play with some of the guards. The warden pimps out inmates to wealthy lesbians.“

So there’s that – for the first two thirds of the film, it’s nudity, showers, torture, physical examinations (lots of them) and sex.
Suddenly however, three inmates stage an escape. I won’t tell you what happens then, but there is a surprising amount of surprisingly graphic sexual activity!
Here’s something that may shock you: I actually thought there was TOO MUCH NUDITY!
Listen, I have no issue with grindhouse cinema – but this is a virtual non-stop barrage of nudity and sexual situations – and it gets more and more graphic by the end of the film – material that is very briefly hardcore!

Blue Underground does a terrific job with this release, and they are right – it’s uncut, and I think it’s the most shocking of all of the “WIP” films.
This reminded me of another classic “Women In Prison” film from the 70’s:
Yes, Jack Hill directed the “Godfather Of WIP” Pictures with “The Bill Doll House” – Pam Grier was in it, and of course, she showered frequently:

This wasn’t Pam’s only time behind bars: this classic “women in prison” movie updated “The Defiant Ones”:
The 70’s Blaxploitation films gave empowered women like Pam Grier plenty of opportunity to kick ass – and sheer as well…see more here:
Let me know what you think of the “Women In Prison” craze!

They showed this on TV here, John. Uncut! It had a different title though, and it was shown on The Horror Channel, for some reason. I watched it, and thought it was mostly amusing, but quite sexy in parts. However, it was so badly dubbed, it became a comedy at times. 🙂
Best wishes, Pete.

Pete, the reason I started his separate website is to discuss crazy cult films away from the more “mainstream” posts I share…there are two Facebook fan pages about cult movies, and these posts do very well there as active conversations are happening about a wide range of cult film all day and night! Thanks for reading and commenting!

I’ve seen this but for some reason my IMDb review has gone missing (maybe someone complained and had it deleted). Here’s a slightly less offensive version of what I wrote:
In a Brazilian prison for women, where the inmates are subjected to physical and sexual abuse on a daily basis, four girls make a bid for freedom. Aided by the prison’s ether-sniffing nurse, the group successfully escape and go on a killing spree.
From the word go, Oswaldo de Oliveira’s sleazy WIP movie delivers wall-to-wall scenes of nudity and lesbianism: nearly every female in his film’s joint—including the guards, prisoners and even the sexy warden, are lesbians. The ones that aren’t are bisexual! This means that viewers can expect a whole shedload of nekkid babes in ill-fitting outfits indulging in all sorts of sexy shenanigans, including oral-sex, mutual masturbation, and strap-on action.
What starts off as a softcore film with simulated sex gradually becomes stronger and stronger in content, until the director gives up all pretences and goes the whole hog, with a couple of (rather crap) hardcore couplings. As well as upping the strength of the sex, de Oliveira also makes the film a whole lot more violent and sleazy in the final half an hour, with the escaped prisoners indulging in a little killing before going their separate ways. In one scene, an entire family is savagely attacked by the girls; the mother and father are shot, the father has his severed penis fed to a barking dog, and then the wanton women proceed to ‘rape’ the under-aged son!
Now I realise that this sounds like the mother of all exploitation films and an unmissable treat for those who dig more ‘unusual’ cinematic fare, but, to be honest, it’s all rather boring. After a couple of lesbian scenes, the film becomes a blur of boobs, bums and beaver and one soon longs for something remotely resembling a decent plot.
The occasional prison torture scene and a second brutal emasculation help to break up the tedium of endless frottage, but are not enough to make me recommend this ultimately disappointing film.

I actually said in my review that it was just too much – there can only be so many showers, beatings and exams…that said, it’s exactly where late 70’s exploitation was headed: fighting off hardcore cinema, needing to continue to push the envelope, and readying for the decimation of their genre by home video! Your review was terrific by the way – spot on!
