Caroline Munro’s Shocking Joe Spinell Double Feature!
Time to celebrate Shocktober Day #3 with the legendary Caroline Munro – she made a lot of great films, but I’m going to focus today on her contribution to #31daysofhorror – including these two great shockers with Joe Spinell!
Munro got her start as a Vogue model when she was seventeen, quickly gaining a fan base as she showed up in small movie roles as well as magazines.
Caroline’s first big role was in 1971, opposite Horror legend Vincent Price in “The Abominable Dr. Phibes” – playing the deceased Mrs. Victoria Regina Phibes.
Munro starred alongside Christopher Lee in “Dracula AD 1972”, then went on to star in the classic “Captain Kronos, Vampire Hunter”!
Lots of other roles followed, including a Bond film, but we are here because of her starring role in the 1980 shocker “Maniac!”
Character Actor Joe Spinell, who has been seen in everything from “Rocky” to “Taxi Driver” and “The Godfather”, was incendiary as a troubled psychopath who was, indeed, a “Maniac!”
Here is the trailer:
Spinell is at his deranged best, and William Lustig’s film is one of the most shocking of its time…yet there is also a real sense of warmth and camaraderie between the two stars onscreen:
Munro is the professional Photographer who befriends the “Maniac”, only to discover his secret…a really horrific movie to be sure!
Two years after the shocking “Maniac”, Munro re-teamed with Spinell for the equally deranged “The Last Horror Film!”
“I’ve seen enough fake blood to know the real thing when I see it.”
With those words, a troubled wannabe Filmmaker stalks the Actress he wants to star in his “horror masterpiece” in the cult classic “The Last Horror Film.”
Legendary Character Actor Joe Spinell Is A “Fanatic!”
“The Last Horror Film” was also known as “Fanatic” – and the 1982 horror film re-teamed Spinell and Munro in a film that was shot during the Cannes Film Festival – without permission!
Yes, Caroline is sporting a VERY early 80’s hairstyle, and yes, it is several different colors at the same time!
The director, David Winters, filmed on location at the Cannes Film Festival – stealing shots as the festival went on around him unaware. Check out the trailer:
Joe Spinell plays a New York City taxi driver who is obsessed with the international cult actress Jana Bates – played by Munro.
It’s a rough, low budget gem that is worth a watch, if only because of the duo’s great work together!
Munro still makes appearances at fan events, and appears in movie projects as well – and she also left behind a lot of cult classics to remember her by!
