My “2020 Sex Kitten Countdown” Has A Movie Legend!
Helen Mirren is the “Grand Dame” of film right now: but I wanted to look at her earlier body of work, where there was a lot of body shown!
Helen Mirren was born in London, and has been in more than 130 films – from Oscar-winning performances like “The Queen” to a number of very provocative films as well!
She got her start in the obscure film “Herostratus” in 1967, and as you can see, the camera loved her. Her breakout role was just ahead, as my “2020 Sex Kitten Countdown” has her revealing “Age Of Consent”!
In 1969, she starred with James Mason in a provocative film for its time: about artistic freedom, creative rebirth – and the “age of consent”.
Mason plays an Australian artist who wants to regain the edge he had as a young man, so he heads to a small island on the Great Barrier Reef.
There he meets a young Helen Mirren, who ends up becoming his model, and his muse…
Check out the trailer, which tries a bit too hard to make this movie far more salacious than it is:
Mirren captures the innocence of a young girl who is on the verge of becoming a woman, and the film is clearly “of its time”…it was the legendary Director Michael Powell’s last film.
Mirren also revealed all in Visionary British Director Ken Russell’s wild 1972 bio pic “Savage Messiah”:
As you can see, she worked with some of the most celebrated Directors of the era:
Not all of her films involved nudity. Mirren went on to co-star in one of my favorite films of all time:
The Brilliant “O Lucky Man!”
Mirren starred with Malcolm McDowell in an amazing film from 1973 called “O Lucky Man”, which was written by McDowell and directed by Lindsay Anderson.
If you haven’t heard of this movie, check out my story, with the film’s trailer and lots of great trivia about this masterpiece of cinema – and how “Seinfeld” paid homage to it in a classic episode involving Kramer:
Of course, her most notorious film was this one:
“Caligula” was the 1979, X-rated story of the Roman Emperor, and it reunited her with Malcolm McDowell:
I own the 3-disc blu-ray that digs into the notorious XXX-rated version of the film that none of the stars knew about – yet she and McDowell took part in a fascinating audio commentary on the disc…see more about it here:
Mirren next starred as a Prostitute in the gritty film “Hussy”:
It was the end of the 80’s that saw her return to X-rated territory:
“The Cook The Thief His Wife And Her Lover!”
This notorious film went out unrated, because its debauched tale of sex, revenge and cannibalism was too shocking to be rated at all!
Mirren has been honest about her sex kitten persona throughout her career, and still will pose for sexy photos to show that a woman can still be attractive later in life.
Still, her early career made her one of film’s most iconic “sex kittens”!
In fact, all of the Actresses featured in this weekly series are being honored for their terrific movie roles:
Cult Movie Queen Caroline Munro is a great example: she made terrific mainstream films like “The Spy Who Loved Me” with 007, and also appeared in classic cult films like “Maniac” and more – see them all here:
