Time For The “A B C’s” Of Sex!
Let’s face it: some documentaries are serious explorations of a subject, expertly films and designed to enlighten and inform – and then there are documentaries that like to party! And NOBODY parties better than the Aussies, who like it dirty down under!
Here are two documentaries that capture a lifestyle, a moment in time – and take you inside worlds you may not have known existed.
Time to head “down under”, with two of the funniest tag lines on a single poster EVER!
Australia After Dark – 1975
Yes, this documentary is going to turn on the spotlight on a country that goes wild when the sun goes down!
It all begins with that classic poster.
Which tagline do you love most?
“They say forbidden fruit tastes the sweetest!”
or…
“I wouldn’t allow my Harold to see such a film!”
Harold doesn’t know what he’s missing! This wild 70’s-era documentary about everything that is crazy down under is a “Mondo Cane” expose!
Check out the trailer:
Time to go behind the bright lights and the beautiful beaches to check out Sydney’s strip clubs and see a very different Australia!
Yes, apparently there is nude tank diving in Australia…why?
Because it photographs well!
Director John D. Lamond asks the simple question: “are you in the mood for some classic “Ozploitation?” Be warned: this ain’t no kangaroo doc!
In 1975, Producer/Director John Lamond made this “mondo guerilla-style” look at the depraved underbelly of a land down-under. It’s an ultra-sleazy, full-frontal journey through the weird and the pathetic, the ugly, the obscene and the beautiful, featuring strippers, swingers, murderers, devil worshippers, nutty gurus, drunken aborigines, and much more.
The film’s own promotion wallows in it:
“From the back alleys of the big cities to the savage cruelty of the outback, discover a continent of pleasure, pain, erotic art, wriggling cuisine, tiny bikinis, alien landings, record-breaking beer consumption and insane amounts of 70s nudity – yes, INSANE AMOUNTS OF 70’S NUDITY! “
This classic documentary is now available for lovers of crazy, “good clean naughty fun”. It’s fully restored from a print recently discovered in the cellar of the Lower Wonga Drive-In and presented uncut & uncensored for the first time ever in America.
Three years later, Lamond was back with this crazy followup:
“The ABC’s Of Love & Sex!”
After using the “After Dark” hook, Lamond decided to go with this hook: the entire film is told in an “A B C” format!
From The Onion’s AV Club review:
“The ABCs Of Love And Sex—Australia Style” is more innovative in its approach to “factsploitation.” Assigning a letter to different clinical sex-ed topics—A is for “anatomy,” B is for “birth,” C is for “contraception,” and so on—”
Trust me, it’s just an excuse to show off lots of nude bodies discussing sexual things!
The ABC’s include footage of breastfeeding babies, nude models lounging on satin sheets, hot-oil massages and the like, mostly shot in a brightly lit, colorfully dressed studio.
In fact, it looks a lot like the classic US TV series from the late 60’s, “Laugh-In!”
The AV Club review goes on to add:
“The movie has the look and tone of a TV commercial, except the product being pitched is orgasms. The tradeoff for the more artful approach is that The ABCs is oddly less sexy and more repetitive than the more docu-realistic After Dark. (Though the 1978 film does includes a couple of short hardcore segments.)”
These two documentaries are fascinating time capsules of a “down and dirty” era…I wish there were docus like this that were shot in New York’s notorious Times Square in the 70’s!
While I own both of these documentaries, they are better if spaced out a bit – still, this release offers them up as a double bill!
Australia had a wild film industry in the 70’s and 80’s – and a great documentary covers it all!
“Not Quite Hollywood!”
This great documentary tells the whole story, with lots of revealing movie clips and interviews with the stars of that were…it was “Mad Max” wild!

I think I could live without seeing these, John. Happily, Australian cinema took a much better turn, and left us with some marvellous modern films, like ‘Picnic At Hanging Rock’, ‘The Odd Angry Shot’, and ‘Lantana’.
Best wishes, Pete.
