Enter The Cult Cinematic World Of Candace Glendenning!
One reason I like to profile Cult Movie Queens of the 70’s is that, so often, their great films are overlooked.
Actress Candace Glendenning is a perfect example. She had serious roles in “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie” in 1969 as well as “Nicholas and Alexandra” two years later – both mainstream, serious films that are as artistic as they are acclaimed – but seriously: that’s not why we are here, is it?
That’s more like it!
Candace made an immediate impact in this great British haunted house thriller:
“Tower of Evil”
This 1972 British film was perfect fodder for double bills and drive-in theaters: A group of experienced archeologists are searching for an old and mystic Phoenician treasure when they are surprised by a series of mysterious murders…of course, when not wandering around naked:
Movies like this needed to offer a few scares, enough “T & A” to keep the crowd’s attention, and if we were lucky, the filmmakers decided to make their films entertaining as well!
Now, to be fair, Candace has most of her shocking encounters while nude, so the evil spirit isn’t stupid…
These British horror films featured more nudity and blood to keep up with the times.
Candace made another film the same year that sported a deliciously wicked title:
“The Flesh and Blood Show!”
The film offers up a standard plot, but it’s always a good one: a Producer assembles a group of unemployed actors and actresses to be in a play, rehearsing in an abandoned theatre beside the sea. A murderer, who wears black gloves, kills the actors in various ways.
This film had a number of great Cult Movie Queens, like Luan Peters:
Luan was also one of my “2020 sex kittens”, and you can see her entire body of work here:
Believe it or not, one of my favorite 70’s Cult Movie Queens was also in the film!
Yes, Judy Matheson also appears in the film – she’s been in a ton of great films throughout the 70’s, and she continues to act and make personal appearances today as well!
See more of her great work here:
What a great cast!
Candace made several more films, but this one from 1976 has been remastered and re-released!
I bought this remastered edition and it’s a moody, creepy British horror film.
A woman traveling with her parents to her uncle’s house crash near his house; her parents die but she survives. She stays with her uncle, but it becomes clear that he and his son are planning something sinister for her.
Yes, there’s plenty of nudity and satanic worship sprinkled through the film – a fun watch!
This was Candace’s last film, but she went on to work in television for years – bravo to her on a great career, which began with an un credited role in this British sex farce:
You see, my “2020 Sex Kitten Countdown” only explores the most outrageous cinema from Actresses like Candace. Although she has been in many great film and TV projects, the fun really all started for us when Candace appeared in “Up Pompeii” in 1971.
It’s pure “nudge nudge wink wink” territory: Candace’s role is un-billed – she was one of many young sex kittens who populated the background of this sex farce.
Madeline Smith had a larger role in the film as “Erotica”, and does she fit the bill!
Smith was also one of that era’s greatest “sex kittens”, and you can see more of Madeline’s terrific work in the 70’s, including when she was the “Hammer Glamour” Queen! See more by clicking here:
Speaking of “Hammer Glamour”, let’s not forget Ingrid Pitt:
This iconic Cult Actress starred in “Countess Dracula” and many more – click here to see them all:
