They Do EXACTLY What You Think They Do!
What an ad – I cut this out of my local Seattle newspaper in the 70’s – because I knew this was a film I had to sneak in to see! Even more, what a pedigree! One of the most entertaining aspects of cult cinema is when you find out that an acclaimed Producer, Director, Writer or Star got their start in the field – and that’s the case with these “Cannibal Girls!”
The film was directed by Ivan Reitman, yes, Mr. “Ghostbusters” himself!
And get ready for this casting coup: it starred Eugene Levy and Andrea Martin!
Time to dig into this tasty cult film from 1973 – first, let’s check out the trailer:
The plot is simple: A young couple spend the night in an old farmhouse owned by a reverend, only to find out that it is also lived in by beautiful women who hunger after human flesh.
Of course they do!
IMDB reports that the film was made for only $9,000 – and was filmed in only 9 days! It was also Martin’s movie debut!
Bonnie Neilson also starred in the film and was a very naked Cannibal Girl!
Clearly, this low budget labor of love was a “calling card” for Reitman, who used the appetite for comic horror to get attention.
And I also love this:
It Was “The Picture With The WARNING BELL!”
Yes, another campy effort to get attention – a warning bell when shocking scenes were about to happen!
Perhaps they should have used the bell to warn this Actor not to wear this underwear!
No matter how big Reitman got in his career, he never forgot this gem. In fact, it appears at the cinema during “Ghostbusters 2!”
Oh, and remember that line from the ad?
“These Girls Do Exactly What You Think They Do!”
A very clever promo line that reminded me that I’ve seen that tease for another film as well:
Yes, the 80’s shocker “Pieces” used it as well! If you haven’t seen it, check out the trailer and more by clicking on my story here:

I love when some of our favorite Talent have a cult film background – I mean, Martin Scorsese himself directed a very naked Barbara Hershey in this cult classic:
Yes, Actress Barbara Hershey did an eye-popping pictorial for Playboy to promote the film – including these nude photos with co-star David Carradine:
Here is a closer look at the film and the photos – see them all by clicking here:

That ‘Warning Bell’ is such a great marketing idea! We would all be making sure to look when we heard it!
Best wishes, Pete.
