Ready To Party With These Women?
How can a film called “The Female Bunch” go wrong? Especially when Jennifer Bishop heads up the cast – with Lon Chaney Jr?
As a lifelong fan of cult cinema, I used to save all of the newspaper ads for films opening in Seattle when I was growing up in the mid-70’s…so imagine my joy in going through them and finding this great drive-in double bill!
The Aurora Drive-In was only a few miles from my house, and when I was growing up, I’d see family films there with my parents and Sisters, and my friends and I would sneak into stuff like this!
Since I found this vintage ad, I wanted to share more about the films!
The main attraction comes to us from legendary cult moviemaker Al Adamson!
“The Female Bunch!”
This 1971 film was a modern-day western is clearly a low budget knock off of “The Wild Bunch”, set in modern times…check out the trailer!
Here’s the plot, courtesy of IMDB: after a string of bad times with men, Sandy tries to kill herself. Co-waitress Libby saves her and takes her to meet some female friends of hers who live on a ranch in the desert.
Grace, played by Jennifer Bishop is the leader of the gang, and puts Sandy through her initiation – buried alive!
Then they get on with the real job of running drugs across the Mexican border, hassling poor farmers, and tearing up bars and having sex with the locals.
Jennifer Bishop starred along with aging horror Actor Lon Chaney Jr., and Russ Tamblyn as well…I own this as part of the Al Adamson massive box set, which is fascinating to watch as Russ Tamblyn and others pop in and out of films like this – and in this case Tamblyn has a roll in the hay that leads to a branding!
Of course, the drive-in experiences always offers a double bill, and that included the one at the Aurora as well:
This 1970 co-feature is actually available right now on Amazon Prime! It’s the story of a unhappy husband’s attempt to have his wife knocked off – but instead he goes after his money by having his wife impersonated by his mistress!
Veronique Vendell shows off her body as the Mistress…I have to assume this would have been a fine little second feature to pass the night away!
There was something magical about going to the drive-in with friends – or a girlfriend…you could watch the movie, sneak in some beer and food, and generally have a party in your car…and when there were films like these, you could even watch them as well!
“Hillbilly Hookers” was one of those drive-in gems, helped by having the legendary Rene Bond showing it all off in the film as well!

I also shared this newspaper ad recently:
I found this one from the mid-70’s as well – an “adult” take on the classic fairy tale starring the terrific cult Actress Cheryl ‘Rainbeaux’ Smith:
