This “Witchcraft” Is XXX-Rated! Georgina Spelvin’s Censored Newspaper Ad! Her Notorious “Devil In Miss Jones” Snake Scene!

Celebrating Georgina Spelvin’s Iconic Adult Movie Career!

Some of you know that I collected movie ads while growing up in Seattle – and as the adult film scene exploded there, I learned all about the XXX-rated superstars of the 70’s, like Georgina Spelvin!

This is a tale of one of Georgina’s biggest hits that I saw advertised with two titles…thanks to a couple of vintage newspaper ads for one of adult film star Georgina Spelvin’s biggest hits!

Georgina Spelvin was born in 1936 as Shelley Bob Graham, and became an adult film star late in her career, after working for years in mainstream entertainment.

She began her professional career as a dancer and later as a chorus girl in such huge Broadway musicals as “Pajama Game”, “Cabaret”, “Guys and Dolls” and “Sweet Charity”.

After a dwindling number of parts on stage, she worked in theater as a choreographer, director, and lighting technician on a number of musicals before moving into the underground film scene, and the burgeoning adult film industry in the early 70’s.

“If You Have To Go To Hell…Go For A Reason!”

Spelvin’s breakthrough was in the 1974 XXX-rated classic “The Devil In Miss Jones”, which featured her fearless performance as Miss Jones, who is tired of her life and commits suicide.

Before she is sent to hell for eternal damnation, she gets the chance to fulfill all of her desires back on earth!

There are a number of classic moments in the film, like Spelvin’s interaction with a snake – and the film made her a huge star!

It has become one of adult cinema’s greatest achievements – as Georgina said at the time:

“I took the role very seriously. I was doing Hedda Gabler here! The fact that there was hard-core sex involved was incidental as far as I was concerned. I was totally deluded. I had made myself believe that I was an actress. I was showing true life as it really was, including actual sex as it really happened, instead of the phony stuff that you got from Hollywood. That was my raison d’etre throughout the whole thing. It was okay; I was okay; I wasn’t a slut.”

Georgina became one of the most famous adult film stars of the era, due in large part to her brave film choices and willingness to put herself out there!

These were heady days in the adult film industry, with “Deep Throat”, “Behind The Green Door” and other provocative adult films showing up on mainstream box office charts!

I was too young to see the film when it opened in Seattle, but I collected the movie ads, just as I did for “Deep Throat”, which was also playing in town at the time.

That’s how I learned about Spelvin – and so I collected this ad when she appeared in a film with a very interesting title – or two:

Georgina Was The “High Priestess Of Sexual Witchcraft!”

What’s interesting about this film is that it was released with a number of different titles, or at least different ads!

Note these two different versions of the ad that ran in two different newspapers in Seattle:

You see, it was “sexual witchcraft” in the more liberal paper, but “adult witchcraft” in the more conservative one! Either way, it was another provocative hit for the Actress!

Georgina plays a young runaway who escapes from abusive men, only to find a happy home with a cult of devil-worshiping lesbians!

Although she was a big star, in reality it was a very bad time for her:

“The Devil in Miss Jones. This was the “birth” of Georgina Spelvin in 1974. From there it was, again, all downhill. This descent spiraled into the pits of sleaze-bag strip joints and alcoholism. Sobriety came November 11, 1981.”

In 1974, while living in Maine, she was charged with transporting obscene materials across state lines for her film “The Devil in Miss Jones” , but the charges were eventually dropped in 1977.

Spelvin made a few software exploitation films as well, like “Girls For Rent”, but she is primarily known for a long run of hardcore adult films in the “golden era of porn” of the 70’s:

Spelvin appeared in more than 70 adult films before retiring from the industry in 1982…including one of those “Inside” films that other adult stars made as well..remember?

Desiree was also a hugely successful adult film star of that era, primarily because of her debut film “Pretty Peaches”…find out all about her “anything goes” career by clicking on my story here;

As I said, many of the biggest stars of that time made those “Inside” films:

Marilyn Chambers made a unprecedented deal to be involved in hers, all part of a fascinating career for the “Ivory Snow” girl – read all about here by clicking on my story here:

  1. I never did get to see ‘Miss Jones’, and I was very disappointed when I finally got to see ‘Deep Throat’ on VHS. But both films were certainly landmarks at the time.
    Best wishes, Pete.
