Meet The First “Muse” Of Jess Franco!
If you know the work of the world’s most prolific Director, Jess Franco, then you know that he LOVED his Actresses…like Lina Romay…
But, did you know that before his long association with her there were others…like Soledad Miranda…
And even before his films with that legendary Actress…there was Janine Reynaud!
Celebrating The Cult Movie Queen Janine Raynaud!
My “2021 Sex Kitten Countdown” has the very prolific career of Franco’s “first Muse”!
Janine Reynaud was born in 1930 in Paris, France. She began her career as a model before teaming up with Jess Franco for 3 great cult shockers:
Franco pushed the limits of cinema early on: these were the days when an overt sexuality or nudity could land you in jail!
Here are those three collaborations:
“Two Undercover Angels” AKA “The Red Lips” And Even AKA “Sadisterotica!”
This was a time when films were routinely renamed for different markets, so you could find this one under a variety of names.
“Red Lips” are two female detectives trying to find missing models and dancers. A pop artist called Klaus Thriller and his werewolf-like assistant, Morpho, are the main suspects for the murderers.
Check out the trailer:
“Succubus” AKA “Necronomicon” was next!
Yes, one movie, multiple titles!
In this 1968 shocker, Janine Reynaud stars as a nightclub stripper who free-floats through a spectral 60’s landscape littered with dream-figures, dancing midgets and bizarre S&M games.
“Kiss Me Monster!”
Their third collaboration has a terrific title!
Look who’s back! The Red Lips return, moonlighting on a striptease world tour – but no sooner do they hit the stage than the girls are up to their pasties in stiffs, Satanists and Sapphic sadists, all after a secret formula for human clones!
Truly an international presence, Janine made films in English, Spanish, French and Italian and as diverse as these titles:
“Castle Of The Creeping Flesh”
This terrifically titled 1968 horror film has a standard plot: In an ancient castle, a mad scientist is trying to revive his dead daughter by an operation, but there are certain body parts he needs that he can’t get. His problem is solved when a group of drunken party-goers stumble into his castle.
She appeared in the cult western “Blindman” with Tony Anthony and Ringo Starr, as well as “Run, Psycho Run” and “Libido: the Urge to Love”:
Reynaud had a wide-ranging career in so many different genres.
She also appeared in one of the classic Italian “Giallo” thrillers of that era:
“The Case Of The Scorpion’s Tale.”
As you can see, she appeared in films around the world…sadly, she was never really that well known in the US, and after this slew of films, she left the movie business completely…
Reynaud stopping making movies at the end of the 70’s. Sadly, she died in 2018 at the age of 87.
As I said, she was one of the earliest Cult Movie Queens for Jess Franco, but his most important collaborator was his wife and partner, Lina Romay:
She was fearless in everything she did, and she did a LOT!

Soledad Miranda also had a pair of classic cult films with Franco:
She was in the midst of a great movie career when tragedy struck…see her story by clicking here:
