Celebrating Cult Movie Queen Lynn Lowry!
One of the joys of doing the “2022 Sex Kitten Countdown” is to highlight an empowered Actress who has had a great career that just keeps going!
After appearing in some of the most acclaimed cult films of the 70’s, Cult Movie Icon Lynn Lowry has never stopped working!
Lynn Lowry was born in 1947 in Illinois, but she grew up in Atlanta, Georgia.
She began acting with a local theater group when she was 17, and also worked as a Playboy Bunny at the Playboy Club in Atlanta when she was in her early 20’s.
She relocated to New York City in the late 1960’s and immediately fell in with the low budget cult film community, which led her to a couple of funny debut credits!
Her first movie role was a small part in “The Battle Of Love’s Return”, which Troma founder Lloyd Kaufman was part of! Even better, look at this film she had a small role in:
One on the greatest cult film titles ever, and Lynn had a small uncredited part…check out on the far right of this shot:
The best part of this film is that it was made on a dare!
If you don’t know this story, click here for the wild tale of how it came to be part of a double bill with “I Eat Your Skin!”
Next up for Lynn was more work with Lloyd Kaufman!
Lynn starred along Cult Movie Queen Mary Woronov – A film producer murders his star actress during an erotic “game” and makes it look like suicide.
The dead girl’s lesbian lover discovers what happened, and plots her revenge.
Lloyd Kaufman of Traom was part of this one – not a successful film but an interesting arthouse effort…and yes, I own it!
Lloyd Kaufman joked that “Sugar Cookies” was the ONLY X-rated film to lose money!

Acclaimed Adult Filmmaker Radley Metzger directed the story of a liberated ’70s couple who seduce another couple into experimentation with bisexuality and group-sex!
This was a very popular X-rated comedy, pushing the envelope at a time when XXX-rated cinema was still in its infancy….
Lynn would next work with another acclaimed Director – a visionary who made what many consider to be the greatest zombie film of all time, “Night Of The Living Dead!”
Yes Lynn starred in legendary Director George Romero’s sci-fi thriller “The Crazies” – check out the trailer.
The military attempts to contain a man-made combat virus that causes death and permanent insanity to those infected, as it overtakes a small Pennsylvania town.
Wow, this surely resonates now, doesn’t it?
Lowry’s run of great cult films continued in 1975:
Yes, she starred in Director David Cronenberg’s shocker “Shivers!”
The residents of a suburban high-rise apartment building are being infected by a strain of parasites that turn them into mindless, sex-crazed fiends out to infect others by the slightest sexual contact.
Here’s the trailer, which used the title “They Came From Within”:
As you can see, Lowry was working with some of the most accomplished and creative Director of the 70’s, and she was empowered and unafraid as well:
Lynn also starred in one of the great action films of 1976, alongside Peter Fonda.
An Arkansas farmer stages a one-man war against corrupt land developers who want to evict him and his neighbors from their farms for real estate developments.
Check out the trailer – oh, this was directed by Jonathan Damme, who went on to make the brilliant “Silence Of The Lambs!”
This is a classic drive-in movie: lots of action, one man fighting back against. corruption, a wife who gets caught in the middle, and the beautiful Lynn Lowry fit the part perfectly…
Lowry had an incredible run of films in the 70’s.
Ultimately, she moved into mainstream film, TV and theater in Los Angeles, but has happy memories about her time in the New York cult film scene – as she said in an interview:
“Well I’ll tell you, those movies I did in the 70’s are remarkable. It didn’t occur to me at that point that any of those films that I was doing were ever going to be part of the “cult genre” of films, which they’ve become. I was just sort of using them as a stepping stone to hopefully move on to some more mainstream films and different kinds of parts than those. It’s still a complete surprise to me. I’m really proud that I did all of them, but I’m still amazed at how many people know them and know my work in them and everything.”
This Cult Movie Queen has never stopped working – she starred in “Model Hunger” along with Tiffany Shepis, who also has had a great cult film career:
I was lucky enough to film some comedy sequences with Tiffany for my show “Wild On The Riviera” for E! – click here to see that and more of her great career!
Lowry’s career just keeps going and going – so impressive!
I look forward to finding more of her films – she is one of the great in the cult film business:
Bobbie Phillips had a great cult and mainstream acting career that became a shocking “True Hollywood Story!”
