30 Years Of Sharon Stone’s Most Provocative Scene! Celebrating “Basic Instinct”!

30 Years Of “Basic Instinct!”

Wow, time flies when you are getting naked on screen! Yes, it was 30 years ago when Sharon Stone cemented her “Sex Kitten” status, thanks to one provocative film!

Celebrating Sharon Stone’s Most Iconic Role!

Sharon Stone has had an impressive career – but there is one role she will always be known for – and 30 years on, it’s still a wildly controversial film!

My “2022 Sex Kitten Countdown” has the story of this great Actress and her iconic role!

Stone was born in 1958 in a small town in Pennsylvania.

In the 80’s she appeared in a wide variety of films and Tv shows, like “Action Jackson” with Carl Weathers and “Above The Law” with Steven Seagal – but her biggest role at that time was in Director Paul Verhoeven’s classic sci-fi film “Total Recall”.

Verhoeven then made her an International superstar when he cast her in “Basic Instinct” in 1992 – here’s the trailer:

Michael Douglas plays a San Francisco Cop trying to catch a vicious killer – who mates before she kills – Stone threw herself fully into the role:

Sharon Stone cemented her place in movie history with a completely uninhabited performance, thanks in part to one of the most notorious scenes in cinematic history:

“Basic Instinct” Sneaks A Peek At Movie Infamy!

Without a doubt the most controversial movie of 1992, and one of the most notorious Hollywood films of the last 30 years – you know, because of THIS scene:

Sharon Stone made Hollywood history with this memorable “show and tell” during her police interrogation in the film – as she uncrosses her legs to show herself to the officers!

Every movie buff knows that Stone wasn’t wearing any underwear in the scene, but here’s some backstory:

“According to Sharon Stone, director Paul Verhoeven asked her to remove her underwear for the leg-crossing scene, as he said they were too bright and reflected at the camera. Stone agreed to do so under the assumption that her genitals weren’t visible. It was only at an early preview that Stone discovered Verhoeven chose to use this specific shot. “

However, Director Paul Verhoeven’s version of the story is different.

He says that “he told Stone beforehand about the leg-crossing shot, as it was important for showing Catherine Tramell’s free-spirited nature and her constant drive to toy with people. Stone was reportedly excited about the idea and shot the scene. However, during the early preview, her agents supposedly disproved of the scene, fearing it would harm her future career. According to Verhoeven, Stone radically changed her mind about the shot and demanded that he remove it, which he ultimately refused.”

Either way, the controversy about the scene made the movie a huge hit – at a time when Michael Douglas was one of Hollywood’s biggest box office stars.

Of course, Stone went on to make a sequel, along with a number of erotic thriller throughout the decade – what a time for erotic cinema!

The 90’s was the “golden age” for “Skinamax” and “VHS Superstars”, because late night pay cable and home video resulted in a deluge of erotic thrillers.

These B-movies ultimately helped brand a pay cable channel – they became “skinamax” features, sexy erotic thrillers that earned Cinemax a reputation for showing them all day and night – classic cult stuff like this!

Of course, a number of terrific Cult Movie Queens had a great run in these films:

  1. I remember the cinema audience I was in absolutely freaking out at that shot in “Basic Instinct”. To be honest I didn’t like the movie much. (Not helping was the early exit of Leilani Sarelle who I found much more attractive than Sharon Stone… see also Jeanne Tripplehorn in the same movie.) Jerry Goldsmith’s music was great though. (But I prefer the other Sharon Stone movies the great man scored – “King Solomon’s Mines” and “Total Recall”)

    • I am a fan of the film for it’s “B” movie trashiness, and Verhoeven and Ezsterhas up’d themselves with an even trashier “Showgirls!” Thanks for the comment, always great to hear from you!

  2. Not a fan of Ms. Stone. She was starlet that got lucky. Her later films proved that. She now is the voice of slot machine.

  3. Also, Sharon was so hated on the set of Allan Quatermain and the Lost City of Gold, the cast and crew peed in the pot she was to be boiled in. Source? Electric Boogaloo: The Untold Story of Cannon films.

  4. I thought the film was pretty good at the time, and that Sharon was suitably cast for that ‘cool persona’. She’s not the greatest actress, but I liked her in ‘Sliver’, and can think of many others from that time who were not so wonderful in the acting stakes.
(Including Julia Roberts, who I think is grossly overrated, and not even that attractive.)
    Best wishes, Pete.

    • Pete, we own the film and find it very entertaining in a “B” movie way – funny all the controversy at the time! As for Stone, I’ve gotten DOZENS of comments on the FB cult film pages about how much people dislike her!
