Celebrating Cult Movie Queen Charlie Spradling!
First, I have to thank Angel for his great cult film pages on Facebook, like “In The Sleaze”, “Beyond Sleaze” and “Can You Dig It?” which is all films of the 70’s!
You see, it was on one of Angel’s site that a shot of Charlie Spradling was featured, and I wanted to find out more about her and her cult movie career!
It turns out that Charlie appeared in a lot of cult films of the 90’s, both theatrical releases as well as many “direct to VHS” erotic thrillers of that era!
Charlie was born in 1968 in Ft. Worth Texas.
She was part of a children’s acting group while growing up, but as soon as she graduated from high school, Charlie headed to Hollywood!
She began working in the cult film world with a small part in the 1988 remake of “The Blob”.
She had a few TV roles before landing a memorable role in David Lynch’s brilliant “Wild At Heart” in 1990.
That same year she had a revealing role in “Puppet Master 2”!
Charlie got her chance to shine in this cult gem:
“To Sleep With A Vampire”
Charlie had the lead in this 1992 thriller, playing Nina….as IMDB.com describes the plot:
“Scott Valentine is a vampire who is torn between his need to feed and his desire to learn about the world of humans. But when he kidnaps Nina, a beautiful but troubled stripper, his world is turned upside down.”
Here’s the trailer:
This was quite the cult film, and Charlie dove into it – causing some reviewers to call her a “Scream Queen!”
Here’s how she reacted to that in an interview from that time:
” I didn’t even know I was in that category. I haven’t seen any of the films I’ve done all the way through. I’m not really up on the genre, and I don’t know any of the other so-called scream queens. Linnea Quigley? Who is she? I don’t live and die as an actress with horror. These are just films I’ve done and, in most cases, I’ve done them for the money.”
Charlie ended up in many films across all genres,
Here are more of her movie roles:
Charlie was candid about how often she worked. As she said in an interview:
“I’ve never been so desperate to work that I would do anything. I turn down a lot of films. I won’t do slasher films, and I will only do nudity when the script is good. I know I’ve done nude scenes in poor films before, but my priorities have changed.”
She also appeared in this “direct to video” erotic action thriller.
Here is the trailer:
As you can see, many of these were “direct to video” releases propelled by VHS – an era when you could rent a few fun films and have a great night in!
Her last film appearance was in 2002…bravo to her for leaving us with a few cult gems…Charlie was one of many Actresses who worked in the “direct to VHS” era…
