Danielle Ouimet Starred In “Maple Syrup Porn!” She Was A “Daughter Of Darkness”!

“Love is stronger than death… even than life.”

With those hypnotic words, my “2022 Sex Kitten Countdown” celebrates the erotic horror of Cult Movie Queen Danielle Ouimet!

One of the joys of remastered and re-released films on home video is that I can discover Cult Movie Queens like Danielle, who appeared in some classic films in the 70’s…

Danielle Ouimet was born on June 16, 1947 in Montréal, Canada.

She has had a long and illustrious career, including a few very provocative films!

It all began when she played a “free spirit” in one of Canada’s earliest erotic dramas!

“Valerie”

This 1969 film is a seminal Quebec erotic tale about a curious girl who leaves her convent to explore the Montréal hippy scene.

Soon, her free spirit winds up on the wrong side of the “swinging 60’s”, and she becomes a prostitute before meeting her true love – who doesn’t know she’s a hooker!

As you can see, the camera loved her, and the very next year, she was at it again:

“Initiation”

This 1970 film is about a young Montreal woman who has an affair with a famous French author, and the experience helps to teach her a number of things about life and love.

Of course, in the US the film had a more provocative poster – and check out that tag line!

Danielle’s “Maple Syrup Porn!”

Yes, this is the film that led to the great genre of “maple syrup porn!”

“Initiation” was dubbed “Maple Syrup Porn” because it was from Canada, where this sort of raw, erotic filmmaking was breaking taboos long followed in cinema.

The film was also known as “Here And Now”, and was considered an unofficial sequel to “Valerie”…

“Maple Syrup Porn” never became a genre for the ages, but that’s OK, we celebrate it here and remember it fondly, especially when it includes lengthy hot sauna scenes!

These two films certainly raised her profile in film, but the best was yet to come!

Next up, a film with this tagline:

“Love is stronger than death… even than life.”

“Daughters of Darkness”

This is Danielle’s most famous work – the 1971 shocker tells the story of a newlywed couple who are passing through a vacation resort. Their paths cross with a mysterious, strikingly beautiful countess and her aide.

Check out the vintage trailer:

This is a classic gothic horror tale, made at a time when censorship rules were being challenged, and there was much for erotic content being shown.

Andrea Rau also starred in the film, with a very revealing role:

As IMDB.com notes when Andrea is lying on the bathroom floor, there were a couple of continuity issues:

“Bikini marks are visible. Vampires are not supposed to have tan lines!”

Ha! Well, I think cult movie fans didn’t mind!

The terrific “Comingsoon.net” website has a GREAT interview with Danielle, including this great conversation about her experience making “Daughters Of Darkness!”

SHOCK: You’ve been very vocal about the problems you had with Harry Kumel on the set of DAUGHTERS and yet, when I spoke to Harry, he seems to think you may have exaggerated things…

OUIMET: I can’t believe this guy…that’s his problem.

SHOCK: Can you tell me about working with Harry, then?

OUIMET: Working with Harry wasn’t that bad, but I think because I was new and because he had no say in my casting, that it bothered him from the start. He didn’t take care for (John Karlen and I), we never got approval for what we did. He was very nervous, insecure and afraid that he wouldn’t be good enough in front of Delphine. I think he decided to target me, used me to take the pressure off. He was always yelling at me, telling me I was always late – which I never was – and that everything I was doing was wrong. Once, however, I was late due to a costume problem and he – like he was every day – was edgy and he said to me that I was impossible to work with and berated me in front of everyone. So I took my hairbrush and I warned him to stop, not to talk to me like this and…he hit me in the face! Hard!

So I jumped at him and we fought and I had to be pulled away and put into another room. But I was still angry and I started to yell and then he hit me again so I jumped on him again and we had to stop the production. The producer ,Henry Lange was called in from Paris and after talking to everyone, he determined that Harry was in the wrong and he made Harry take some pills and said if he didn’t take them he’d be fired.

Wow!

Danielle has much more to say as well, and you can see it all at their great website here:

By the way, “Daughters Of Darkness” is available on DVD and a newly remastered blu-ray edition as well, with lots of bonus extras!

In 1972, Danielle had one more horror film:

It’s the story of a man, 2 women and an inescapable pact made with the Devil. Following a friend’s apparent suicide, Paul (Pilon) begins to believe that something strange is going on.

According to IMDB:

“The English-language video release was a TV print of the film and therefore had been edited for content. It’s missing 95% of the scene where the devil-worshipers are partying after Danielle Ouimet’s swearing in ceremony to the cult.”

If looking for this one, make sure it’s the uncut French version!

After that, Danielle returned to Montreal where she did radio and television. She has also published two autobiographical accounts.

What a terrific career,, with one classic erotic horror film that is readily available today!

“Daughters Of darkness” had lesbian undertones, something that was exploited a number of times in 70’s gothic horror…like this one:

This 1970 classic starred Ingrid Pitt and Madeline Smith, and included a lot of nudity and female love scenes:

Ingrid was one of the great “Hammer Glamour Queens”, and you can see more of her revealing work by clicking on my story here:

Madeline Smith was also a Hammer Glamour Queen, and was featured prominently in “The Vampire Lovers” as well:

  1. “the Montréal hippy scene.” not a phrase I’ve ever seen before. “Maple syrup porn” was a terrible name. Who wants to visualise a brown, sticky liquid around attractive people.

    • Hey, I just reported it! Also, these weren’t explicit in the XXX-way, which is what is commonly called “porn” but hey, those Canadians!

      • They came up with the name, but you’d think they could have come up with a more enticing name considering Canada gave us Helen Shaver, Margot Kidder, Shay Mitchell and many other studies in hotness from the Great White North…

      • Except that everyone you mention is well past Danielle, so hopefully someone updated it to a much better name!

  2. I remember her from Daughters of Darkness, and had to laugh at the classic ‘Sauna scene’ in that other film.
    Best wishes, Pete.
